The setting of this story is in both the reality world and the fantasy world. It starts of in a house with a family called the Langlander. This book is based about the troubles and trustworthiness of the relationship between a family called the Langlander and how they discover a new world in their own music box.
Leo is a good, responsible and sensible fellow who is careful of things that he cares about, but he can be a bit anxious. He worries far too much about things. But he is nothing like his cousin Mimi. Mimi is very stubborn, she can be bossy and sometimes a 'big-headed' until she gets what she wants, but that makes her a persistent person. Their relationship isn't as great, neither of them like each other. In fact, Mimi is Leo's least favourite cousin and their relationship is the most important part of this book.
Leo has inherited an old music box from his late aunty, Aunt Bethany. You would only receive the music box if she thought you were trustworthy enough. So that meant it was his responsibility to take care of the music box. This music box has been passed down through generation. It wasn't just any old ordinary box, it had rules to how it was played:
"Never shut the box when the music is playing, never move the box until the music stops, don't turn the key more than three times and never close the lid until the music has finished." Leo would never dream of breaking the rules of the box, but when his least favourite cousin Mimi comes over to stay, she is curious of what will happen and so she breaks the rule by turning the key four times. As this is happening a devious Blue Queen appears from the music box and abducts Mimi's dog, Mutt. Mutt is the only thing that Mimi values most, actually it's the only thing she ever loved. Mimi would do anything to have him back, but Leo couldn't let her go on her own. So they then set out on a quest in search for the dog, and that is when they discover a fantasy world full of weird and strange creatures. This fantasy world was the world of Rondo.
Whilst they are on their quest, they both create new relationships with others and with each other too. Leo and Mimi didn't have a great relationship before they came to Rondo but when they arrived to Rondo they both started to build up a great bond and trusted each other. As the both regain their relationship, Leo changes his mind about his outlook on Mimi.
When they're in a world where nobody knows them and they are called invaders, they try to figure out who they should trust. They've heard many stories about Rondo and who the people are, but they never knew they would be related to someone in Rondo. Like the queen's servant. In the end they soon discover who some of the people in Rondo really are.
Personal response:
In my opinion, I enjoyed reading this book but I think it would be great if this book was used as a movie. The Key to Rondo is quite similar to Narnia but still, a great book! This book is really intriguing because it has a lot of suspense which makes it exciting. It gets you excited about reading each chapter. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy books or mysterious things in a story. I admire Mimi's qualities because she is always persistent until she reaches her goal.
